A mastopexy, or "breast lift" is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts.
Factors such as pregnancy, nursing and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts will often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A mastopexy leaves scars, though they can be covered by your bra or bathing suit.
Breast lifts are performed under general anaesthesia, and the surgery typically takes three hours. Dr. Niessen uses an anchor shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast. Sutures are located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the areola and along the lower crease of the breast. |

Post operatively, you will wear an elastic bandage or surgical bra over the gauze dressings. Your breasts will be bruised, swollen and uncomfortable for a day or two. You will be given a prescription for pain medication. Within 10 days, the bandage or surgical bra will be replaced by a soft support bra. You can expect some loss of feeling in your nipples and breast skin after surgery. The numbness sometimes fades. In some patients it may last a year or more, and occasionally it may be permanent.
Although you may be active in a day or two, you may be off work for a week, depending on how you feel. Patients should avoid lifting anything over their head and playing strenuous sports for two weeks. One month after your surgery, you may resume your regular activities. |
