   About The Surgery

Your breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anaesthesia either in hospital or a fully accredited private surgical facility.  Your anaesthesia is given by a physician who holds a specialty certification in anaesthesia from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Canada).

The surgical incision is typically made in the crease where the breast meets the chest wall, or at the edge of the areola. Sutures are used to close the incisions. A gauze bandage will be applied over the breasts, followed by a supportive dressing. Dressings stay on until you come back to see Dr. Niessen at your first post-op visit.

Cosmetic Breast Surgery

The first 24-48 hours after the procedure is when you will experience discomfort. Your breasts may be swollen and tender. You will, however, be up and around the same day. Any discomfort you have will be controlled by medication prescribed by Dr. Niessen. At your first post-op visit, your bandages will be removed and you may wear a bra. Your breasts may feel sensitive to stimulation for 2-3 weeks, so you may wish to avoid physical contact. Sutures will be removed in 7-10 days, but it may take two weeks for the swelling in your breasts to disappear. Initially, your scars may be pink and firm. They usually soften and fade and become less conspicuous.

You may be back at work within a few days, depending on the level of activity required for your job.  Dr. Niessen will give you specific advice regarding exercising and returning to normal activities.
