During your surgery, breast implants will be placed either on top of the muscle located below the breast gland (subglandular) or under the chest wall (submuscular).
Under Chest Wall (Submuscular)
For youthful looking breasts, submuscular placement may provide this youthful look for a longer period of time. Breast implants under the chest wall may reduce the chance of your implants developing scar tissue around them. Also, the chances of implants being felt through the skin is reduced.
Submuscular placement makes it much easier to capture your breasts during a mammogram.
Disadvantages of choosing to place the breast implants under the chest wall are patients may experience a longer surgery and recovery.
Below the Breast Gland (Subglandular)
Implant placement below the breast gland can make your surgical procedure time shorter and decrease recovery time.
Disadvantages for choosing subglandular breast implant could mean having the edge of your implant less conspicuous through the skin. It is also much more difficult to capture imaging during a mammogram.
