Lipodissolve: Melting Fat with Injections |

|
History
Brazilian dermatologist, Dr. Patricia Rittes, began treating patients in 1995 with injections to dissolve fat deposts under the skin. She first published her technique in 2001. Two years following this finding, Austrian physician Dr. Franz Hasengschwantner started similar treatments. He founded Network-lipolysis in 2003 and began training physicians his techniques. As well, the Network developed a standard solution to inject and a formal protocol to treat stubborn fat deposits all over the body.

Today Network-lipolysis has over 1100 physician members in 60 countries. Dr. Hasengschwantner taught Dr. Marcus Niessen the theory behind injection lipolysis and his treatment technique in January and November 2007. With completion of this training, Dr. Niessen became the fifth physician in Canada to be certified by the Network. He began treating patients in 2007.
How Fat Dissolves
Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) is a component of every cell in our body. As well, PPC is produced naturally by our bodies. It is highly concentrated in liver cells and fat cells and is a large part of nerve cells. PPC injected to dissolve stubborn fat deposits is derived from the soy plant. It has been used in other fields of medicine to treat fat embolism in the lung and for lowering blood cholesterol levels. When PPC is injected into fat cells, it has a detergent like effect and causes fat cells to rupture and then dissolve. The liver then breaks down this fat and it is excreted by the body. These fat dissolving injections also cause tightening of the skin in the treatment areas. This is an advantage of the technique over liposuction in certain areas. Areas which can be treated by injection lipolysis are: abdomen, back fat rolls, love handles, thighs, knees, neck arms and face.
Patients can expect reddening, swelling and bruising in treatment areas for one to two days following the procedure. Some patients experience an increased number of stools for up to two days. In October 2006, a landmark study was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Mark Palmer M.D., John Curran M.D. & Patrick Bowler M.D.)
This study examined patient outcomes in 10,581 treatments in the United Kingdom. Burning/stinging, redness, swelling and bruising at the injection site was described as "very mild" (18.4%) or "mild" (39.2%). 73.8% of patients were either "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with treatment.
The number of treatments required depends on the size of the fat deposit to be treated and the body location. Typically, one to four treatments are required. 89% of patients in the study needed either one (17%) or two (72%) injections to achieved their desired results. Injections are given 8 weeks apart. Results are typically seen 4-6 weeks after treatment.
Am I a Candidate for Injectiion Lipolysis?
Fat melting injections with PPC are a safe and non-invasive treatment for stubborn fat deposits all over the body. Patients reluctant to undergo liposuction may find them particularly attractive.
Book an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Niessen to see if injection lipolysis can improve how you feel about yourself.
